root art center

this has nothing to do with bosnia, but it does have to do with my sister and brother-in-law. they are doing really really amazing things in mt. vernon, ohio. i'm really proud of them.

sarajevo

there is just something about this city. call me crazy.

for those who don't know, i'm currently in sarajevo, bosnia, doing research for my master's thesis. if you want to know more, feel free to ask.

a quick story for you:

a few days ago, i went to change money (i had huge bills and i wanted smaller ones) and i went into a souvenir shop to ask for smaller bills. the shop owner took my hand and led me up and down the street trying to scrape together enough money to change my bills.

once we returned to his shop, he proceeded to put a little weird turkish hat on my head that was purple and red and hand me this giant traditional instrument (like an enormous banjo). he told me to wait right there. so there i am, in the sidewalk, with a giant banjo and a ridiculous hat, waiting for him.

he returned triumphantly with a camera, stuck a hand carved cigarette holder in my mouth, and took a picture of me for his next advertisement. i think. he just kept shaking the newspaper at me and pointing to his ad in the paper. i just strummed my banjo and nodded.

it is an amazing thing about traveling to a place you don't speak the language. the smallest accomplishments (getting change for $100) can make your whole day brighter.
